A Brazilian Portuguese café roleplay

Choose your replies, read the next question, and practise keeping a short café conversation going.

Start practising

Practise a complete exchange.

A café conversation often continues after the first request. You may be asked where you will drink, whether you want anything else and how you will pay. This written roleplay lets you choose replies and rehearse a way to recover when you miss a question.

Read your reply aloud before selecting it. Then read the next line from the server. There is no audio or pronunciation scoring here; use a speaker’s recording or a teacher to model the sound.

Every amount and exchange on this page is a fictional practice example. Real cafés use different questions, wording and prices.

Choose your side of the conversation.

Without JavaScript, choose a drink below, then follow either here/takeaway answer. Continue through the extra question, optional clarification, payment and goodbye. Cover the model reply first if you want to try it from memory. For a partner exercise, swap roles and ask the extra question at a different pace.

Choose a drink

Server: Bom dia! O que você gostaria?
Good morning! What would you like?

Customer: Um café, por favor. — A coffee, please.

Customer: Uma água sem gás, por favor. — A still water, please.

Start with a complete request and add por favor.

Coffee: for here or takeaway?

Server: Para tomar aqui ou para levar?
To drink here or to take away?

Customer: Para tomar aqui, por favor. — To drink here, please.

Customer: Para levar, por favor. — To take away, please.

Para tomar aqui means you will drink it here. Para levar means takeaway.

Water: for here or takeaway?

Server: Para tomar aqui ou para levar?
To drink here or to take away?

Customer: Para tomar aqui, por favor. — To drink here, please.

Customer: Para levar, por favor. — To take away, please.

Keep the same reply structure even when you choose a different drink.

An extra question

Server: Mais alguma coisa?
Anything else?

Customer: Só isso, por favor. — That is all, please.

Customer: Pode repetir mais devagar? — Can you repeat that more slowly?

If you miss a question, ask for repetition before choosing your answer.

Ask for clarification

Server: Você quer mais alguma coisa?
Would you like anything else?

Customer: Só isso, por favor. — That is all, please.

The server has restated the question. You can now say that your order is complete.

Practise paying

Server: São doze reais. Dinheiro ou cartão?
It is twelve reais. Cash or card?

Customer: Cartão, por favor. — Card, please.

Customer: Dinheiro, por favor. — Cash, please.

The amount is invented for this exercise. Choose a payment phrase; it does not initiate a payment.

Close politely

Server: Certo. Obrigado!
All right. Thank you!

Customer: Obrigado! Até logo! — Thank you! See you later!

Customer: Obrigada! Até logo! — Thank you! See you later!

Conventionally, a male speaker uses obrigado and a female speaker uses obrigada. Choose the form you use.

Conversation complete

Server: Até logo!
See you later!

Try another branch: swap the drink, change here/takeaway, or ask for clarification.

After one round, identify the reply you found hardest to understand. Repeat that short exchange on its own before starting another conversation. The goal is to practise responding, rather than memorising one unchanging script.
